# Printing

> The three things you can print for an animal: the adoption flyer, the cage card and the printed record, and how each is reached.

An animal can be printed three ways, and each is a different document for a different reader:

| Printout | Who it is for | What it reads |
| ------------------------------- | ------------------------------ | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Flyer** | The public, on a noticeboard. | Only what your public page shows. |
| **Cage card** | Whoever walks past the kennel. | The record, limited to the fields your card template asks for. |
| **Print…** (the printed record) | A vet, a foster, a file. | The whole record, in the sections you choose. |

All three are opened from the **Actions** menu at the top of the [animal record](/animals/record) (the button with three lines). Anyone who can **See** Animals can print them. Each opens a page with a preview, a **Back to the animal** link, and a **Print** button that opens your browser's print dialog. The buttons and menus on the page are left off the paper.

## The flyer

An adoption flyer for a noticeboard: "Looking for a home", the animal's name, and a photo. Choose **Flyer** from the **Actions** menu.

The flyer only shows what your public page shows, so nothing private can appear on it. For the same reason it is only offered for an animal that is published. If you reach the flyer for an animal that is not, the page says **No flyer for this animal yet**: mark the animal public on its record, and check that its status is one marked public under **Settings → Animal management → Animal statuses**.

It prints, when the record has them:

* the external name, or the name;
* the breed (or kind and variety) and the species;
* the profile photo, whole and uncropped;
* **Sex**, **Born**, **Spayed / neutered**, **Adoption fee** ("Free" when the fee is zero) and **Reference** (the animal's ID);
* the description;
* at the foot, your logo (or your organization's name when there is no logo), your contact email, phone and address, never a person's.

The flyer is black on white, because noticeboard flyers get photocopied.

### The QR code on the flyer

The menu beside **Print** chooses the code at the foot:

* **QR code to their page on our website** prints a code, captioned "Scan to see" and the name, that opens the animal's page on your public site.
* **No QR code** leaves it off.

When your organization has no web address for the code to open, the first choice reads **No website page to point a QR code at** and cannot be chosen.

## The cage card

The card that hangs on the kennel door. Choose **Cage card** from the **Actions** menu. It is offered for every animal, published or not, because an animal that has just arrived is exactly the one whose kennel needs a card.

A cage card reads the animal record, so it can carry medical and behavioural notes that the flyer never would. That is why it prints only the fields its template asks for. Templates are designed under **Settings → Operations & forms → Cage cards** by someone with **Configure** on Animals: the paper size, the fields and their order, whether the photo prints, and where the QR code leads. See [Cage cards and IDs](/settings/cage-cards-and-ids).

When your rescue has more than one template, choose one from the menu beside **Print**. The default template is chosen first. The line under the card names the template it was printed from, so anyone holding a card that says too much knows where to change it.

Until your rescue makes a template, the card prints the standard set: name, ID, species, breed, sex, age, status, location and intake date, on a 4 × 6 in index card. It carries no medical or behavioural note.

The fields a template can print are the name, **ID**, **Species**, **Breed**, **Sex**, **Age**, **Spayed/neutered**, **Status**, **Location**, **Intake date**, **Days in care**, **Microchip**, **Health**, **Medical**, **Behaviour**, **Adoption fee** and the description. A field the record leaves empty is not printed. **Behaviour** prints only the traits your behaviour catalogue allows on the kennel card.

The page is set to the template's paper, so your print dialog starts on the right size. The card on screen is the card on paper.

### The PetSmart adoption-partner card

A template can use the style **PetSmart adoption-partner card** instead of a list of fields. It prints the partner card at its own size, 5.875 × 9 in, with the lines in the places the stores expect:

* your organization as **Adoption Partner**, and the adoption fee;
* **Hello, my name is:** and the name;
* **Pet Description** (colour, pattern and coat), gender, **Breed/Mix**, approximate age and date of birth;
* the dates the most recent combo and rabies vaccines were given, from the animal's vaccine records;
* whether the animal has been spayed or neutered;
* **Neat things to know about me:** with the description, cut short if it is long;
* the photo and a QR code, the same size, side by side. The template's **Corners** setting decides which side each is on.

The programme's sponsor logos print at the foot, followed by any your template adds.

Anything only the store knows, such as **Date of Arrival at Store**, and anything the record does not have, is printed as a blank line to write on.

## The printed record

The whole record on letter paper, for a vet visit, a new foster, or a file. Choose **Print…** from the **Actions** menu.

It is headed with your logo (or your organization's name) in your public site's colour and type, the animal's name, status, ID and location, and the profile photo.

### What to print

Tick the sections you want under **What to print**. Every section except **Organization footer** starts ticked. Your choice is remembered in this browser for the next record you print; **Reset to all** puts them back.

| Section                          | What it prints                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            |
| -------------------------------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Pet details** | Name, external name (when different), other names, ID, species, breed or kind, variety, sex, altered, age, date of birth, size, colour, pattern, coat, health, microchip vendor and number, status, location, intake date and source, adoption fee, tags. |
| **Description**                  | The description.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          |
| **Behaviour and placement** | Traits, medical flags, the answers about the home the animal needs, and for a cat, declawed and FIV. Traits your catalogue says must be told to an adopter are listed under **Must be disclosed**. |
| **Upcoming and overdue** | Every medical item with a due date that is not yet done, soonest first. |
| **Vaccines**                     | Vaccine records.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                          |
| **Procedures**                   | Procedures and surgeries.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 |
| **Vet exams**                    | Physical exams.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                           |
| **Diagnostics**                  | Tests.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    |

| **Treatments and preventatives** | Treatments and preventatives. |
| **Organization footer** | Your organization's name, phone and email at the foot. |
| **Food and supplements** | The diet and the feeding list. |
| **Weight history** | A chart of the readings and a table of every one. |
| **Custom fields** | Your own fields for animals. |
| **Notes and results** | Not a section. Ticked, the medical sections carry each record's result, its recorded values and its notes, and the weight table carries each reading's note. |

The medical sections list each record's date, the item, and who did it and where. A section with nothing in it prints "Nothing recorded." rather than disappearing, so whoever holds the paper can tell an empty section from one that was left out.

The printed record reads the whole record, so it can show anything on the animal's own page. Choose the sections with the reader in mind.
