# The operations report

> Intakes, outcomes, the live release rate and who is in care, for any period, and exactly what each figure counts.

The **Operations report** gives the figures a board or a grant application asks for: how many animals arrived, how many left and how, the live release rate, and how many are in care. Every figure says what it counted, so you can answer when somebody asks where a number came from.

It is not in the sidebar: open the search palette (the **Search** box at the top of the page, or **Ctrl K**, **⌘ K** on a Mac) and type "Reports". Anyone whose role can **See** Animals can open it.

## Choosing the period

Set **From** and **To**, then press **Run it**. Both days are included.

The report opens on the period from the first day of the month twelve months ago up to today. **From** cannot be after **To**, and a period can be at most 1,100 days (about three years). A period that does not work says "That period didn't work. Check the dates and try again."

## The figures

Four figures run across the top. Hover over any of them to read its definition.

| Figure                | What it counts                                                                                                                 |
| --------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| **Intakes**           | Arrivals recorded with an intake date inside the period. An animal that arrived twice is counted twice, because it did.        |
| **Outcomes**          | Animals whose outcome date falls inside the period, and whose status now is **Placed** or **Out of care**.                     |
| **Live release rate** | Live outcomes as a percentage of all outcomes in the period, to one decimal place, with the two numbers under it ("12 of 15"). |
| **In care**           | Animals whose status today is one you treat as **In care**.                                                                    |

### Intakes

Intakes are counted from the intakes recorded on animals, by their intake date, not from the animals themselves. An animal that was adopted, returned and adopted again has two intakes. See [Intakes](/animals/intakes).

### Outcomes

An outcome is an animal with an outcome date, such as the day it was adopted. There is no separate outcome type, so each one is grouped by what its status means **now**, using the care state you gave each status under **Settings → Animal management → Animal statuses** (see [Animal management](/settings/pet-configuration)):

* **Placed** statuses are live outcomes.
* **Out of care** statuses are other outcomes.

An animal whose status is back to **In care** is not counted, even if it has an outcome date in the period. An animal in a status your organization has never defined is left out rather than guessed at.

### Live release rate

Live outcomes divided by all outcomes. "Live" means the animal's current status is one you marked as **Placed**, so the figure follows your own status setup: if you mark the status you use for transfers as Placed, a transfer counts as live.

A period with no outcomes has no rate. The figure shows a dash and says **No outcomes in this period**, never 0%.

### In care

A count of today, shown **as of** today's date, whatever period you chose. Nothing records the day an animal's status changed, so the report cannot say how many were in care at the start or end of a past period, and it does not guess.

## The breakdowns

Under the figures, three panels show what went into them. Each row gives a count and its share of the panel's total.

| **How they arrived** | Intakes in the period by type: Stray, Owner surrender, Transfer in, Born in care, Returned, Confiscation, Unknown, Other. |
| **How they left**    | Outcomes in the period by the status each animal is in now, in your own status names.                                     |
| **In care today**    | Animals in care today, by status.                                                                                         |

## Exporting

There is no export from this page. To keep a period's figures, note them or print the page from your browser.
