# Transports

> Planning relay runs: the legs of the journey, who drives each one, the animals riding, and the checks that must pass before a run is confirmed.

**Transports** plans relay runs. A run is one journey (Atlanta to Boston, say) broken into legs, each a short drive by a different volunteer, who hands the animals on to the next driver where their leg ends.

It is not in the sidebar: open the search palette (the **Search** box at the top of the page, or **Ctrl K**, **⌘ K** on a Mac) and type "Transports". Anyone whose role can **See** Animals can open it; creating and changing runs needs **Change** on Animals.

## The runs list

Across the top:

| Figure | What it means |
| ------------------------- | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Runs** | How many runs match the filter. |
| **Planned** | How many are still being planned. |
| **Legs without a driver** | Legs nobody is driving yet, out of all the legs on runs still going ahead. Cancelled runs are not counted. |
| **Animals travelling** | Animals on runs that are not cancelled. |

Each run shows its name, where it starts and ends, and its date; how many of its legs have a driver (or **No legs yet**); how many animals are on it; and its status. A run still being planned or confirmed that has legs without a driver is flagged, for example **2 legs without a driver**.

The newest runs by date come first. The list shows the fifty most recent.

The **Status** filter counts the runs at each status. Under **Views**, **+ Save current view** keeps a filter to come back to.

## New run

Press **New run** and fill in **New transport run**. Every field is required.

| Field | What it means |
| ---------------------------- | -------------------------------------------------- |
| **What is this run called?** | Something a volunteer would recognize in an email. |
| **Date** | The day of the run. |
| **Starts at** | Where the journey begins. |
| **Ends at** | Where it ends. |

Press **Create run**. The run is added to the list at **Planning**, with no legs. Open it to plan the legs.

A run's name, date and places cannot be changed after it is created.

## Statuses

| Status | What it means |
| --------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------- |
| **Planning** | Being put together. A run can be incomplete while you plan it. |
| **Confirmed** | The chain is whole and people are being told it is happening. |
| **On the road** | Under way. |
| **Completed** | Done. |
| **Cancelled** | Not happening. |

Change the status from the **Status** card at the top of a run. While a run is at Planning, the card says either **Ready to confirm.** or **Fix the problems below before confirming.**

Only confirming is checked. A run with anything still to sort out cannot be set to **Confirmed**: the card says it is not ready, and how many problems are listed. Every other status can be chosen at any time. Changing a run's status does not change anything on the animals.

## Things to sort out

Every run shows, from the moment it is created, every reason it is not ready to confirm, so there is time to fix them. The list is headed **One thing to sort out**, or how many there are, and the same problems are shown under the leg they belong to.

| Problem | What it means |
| ------------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |
| No legs | The run has no legs yet. |
| No driver | A leg has nobody driving it. |
| A gap between legs | One leg ends somewhere other than where the next one starts, so nobody is covering the distance between them. |
| Wrong start | Leg 1 does not start where the run starts. |
| Wrong end | The last leg does not end where the run ends. |
| Times out of order | A leg arrives before it leaves, or leaves before the leg before it arrives. Only checked where both times are filled in. |

Places are compared ignoring capital letters and extra spaces, and nothing else. "Exit 42, Pilot" and "Exit 42 Pilot" count as different places, so type a handover point the same way on both legs.

The list is not shown on a completed or cancelled run.

## Legs

The **Legs** card holds the journey in order, as **Leg 1**, **Leg 2** and so on.

| Field | What it means |
| ----------- | ---------------------------------------------- |
| **From** | Where the leg starts. Required. |
| **To** | Where it ends. Required. |
| **Leaves** | When it leaves. Optional while planning. |
| **Arrives** | When it arrives. |
| **Driver** | The person driving this leg, from your people. |

* **Add leg** adds a leg to the end, starting where the last one ended.
* The arrows beside a leg move it earlier or later. The bin removes it.
* **Save legs** saves the whole list at once. Until you save, the card says **Unsaved changes**, and nothing you changed is kept if you leave the page.

A run can have up to 40 legs.

## Animals on this run

The animals riding, with each one's species and status. **Remove** takes an animal off the run.

<Note>
The app does not yet offer a way to add an animal to a run.
