# Slack

> Ask the rescue from Slack with /rescue, and get your own notifications there as a direct message.

The Slack app does two things once an admin has added it to your workspace:

* **`/rescue`** answers from the rescue in any channel, as whoever asks. Only the person who asked sees the answer.
* **Your notifications as a direct message**, for each person who turns it on under **My account**.

## Add it to Slack

    Open **Settings → Advanced & security → Integrations**. Slack is at the bottom of the page. Only an organization admin can add it.

    Press **Add to Slack**. Slack asks you to allow the app into your workspace: it asks to add the `/rescue` command, to send direct messages, and to read people's names and email addresses. Press **Allow**.

    You come back to the Integrations page, which says it was added and names the workspace.

A workspace answers for one rescue. If the workspace is already connected to another rescue on RescueConsole, Slack says so and nothing is added.

## /rescue

### Who is asking

Slack tells RescueConsole the email address of whoever typed the command. The answer comes only if somebody who signs in to your rescue uses that address, and it is given with that person's own role: somebody whose role cannot read animals is told so, exactly as the app would. Somebody who does not sign in to your rescue is told only that they are not matched.

Who is on shift names the volunteers only for somebody whose role can read people. Anybody else sees the times.

## Your notifications in Slack

Under **My account**, **Notifications in Slack** appears once the app is in your workspace. Tick **Send my notifications to me in Slack** to get the bell's notifications as direct messages from the app, each with a link back to the record. It is off until you turn it on.

It finds you in Slack by your email address, so Slack has to know you by the same one you sign in with. Notifications are sent every five minutes, and nothing from before the app was added is sent.

## Take it out

Press **Remove from Slack** on the Integrations page. `/rescue` stops answering and nobody gets direct messages.

If Slack's side of the connection is removed first (somebody took the app out of the workspace in Slack), the Integrations page says so the next time the app tries to use it. Press **Add to Slack again**.

## The demo

The demo cannot add the Slack app: everybody shares its sign-in, and it would put the demo in a real workspace.
