# The organizations list

> Your directory of vet practices, partner rescues, suppliers and employers: what it shows, how to filter it, and every field on a new organization.

**Organizations** in the sidebar opens your directory of the organizations your rescue deals with: veterinary practices, partner rescues and shelters, suppliers, the employers your volunteers work for, and government offices. Your own rescue has a page of its own, [Our organization](/organizations/ours), reached from **Our organization** at the top of the list.

The people at an organization are not copied into it. Each is a person in [People](/people/list), linked to the organization by an [affiliation](/people/record#affiliations), so a vet who also fosters for you is one person, not two.

You need **See** on Organizations to open the directory, and **Change** on Organizations to add or edit an organization. Permissions are set per role under [Settings → Team & volunteers → Team roles](/settings/team).

## The numbers at the top

| Count | What it counts |
| ---------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| In the directory | Organizations matching your search and filters. |
| Active clients | Those whose relationship is **Active vendor or client**. |
| Vet practices | Those whose kind is **Veterinary practice**. |
| Archived | Organizations kept because records cite them, and hidden from the list unless you ask for them. |

## Kinds

What an organization is: **Veterinary practice**, **Rescue**, **Shelter**, **Supplier**, **Employer**, **Government** or **Other**.

Only a **Veterinary practice** can be chosen where the app asks for a practice, such as on a [medical record](/animals/medical), and only a veterinary practice can be your primary practice or be marked as taking emergencies.

## Relationships

What an organization is to your rescue: **Prospect / lead**, **Active vendor or client**, **Past vendor or client**, **Partner / sponsor**, **Vendor / supplier** or **Competitor**. It sits beside the kind rather than replacing it, so a veterinary practice can also be a past vendor.

When the relationship is chosen or changed, the organization's record notes the day, and shows the relationship as "since" that date. Saving the same relationship again keeps the original date.

## Filters and search

The panel on the left filters the list, and each option shows how many organizations you would get if you chose it.

| Filter | What it does |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Kind | Organizations of that kind. |
| Relationship | Organizations with that relationship. |
| Archived | **Include archived** adds archived organizations to the list. |

**Search by name** finds organizations whose name contains what you type.

### Saved views

Above the filters, **Views** keeps filter combinations you use often. Set the filters, press **+ Save current view**, give it a **View name** and press **Save**. Click a view to apply it; applying one clears any filter it does not set. The bin beside a view deletes it. Your views are your own: colleagues do not see them.

## Columns

**Columns** chooses which columns the list shows: **Name** (always shown), **Kind**, **Relationship**, **Industry** and **Contact**. Your choice is remembered in this browser only.

| Column | What it shows |
| ------------ | ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Name | The name, with **Primary vet**, **Emergency** or **Archived** beside it when they apply. |
| Kind | See [Kinds](#kinds). |
| Relationship | See [Relationships](#relationships). |
| Industry | The industry and its code. |
| Contact | The phone number and town of the organization's main location. |

The list is in alphabetical order, with your primary practice first. Click a row to open [the organization's record](/organizations/record).

## Adding an organization

**Add organization** opens a panel beside the list. Fill it in and press **Add organization**.

| Field | What it means |
| ------------ | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
| Name | Required. |
| Kind | See [Kinds](#kinds). **Veterinary practice** is chosen to start with. |
| Website | Their website address. |
| Notes | Anything else worth knowing. |
| Relationship | See [Relationships](#relationships). **Not recorded** leaves it empty. |
| Industry | The kind of business they are in, from a list of industries a rescue's directory usually holds. The code is saved with the name it had when you chose it. **Not recorded** leaves it empty. |

Which of these fields the form shows, their order, and which are required are set under [Settings → Data & customization → Record layouts](/settings/record-layouts). **Name** cannot be hidden. Organizations do not have custom fields.

### Veterinary practice

When the kind is **Veterinary practice**, two more boxes appear:

* **Our primary practice**: the practice offered first when somebody chooses a practice on a medical record. Only one practice can hold this at a time; naming a new one releases the old.
* **Takes emergencies**: marks the practice as one that takes emergencies. It is shown in the list and beside the practice's name when choosing one on a medical record.

Changing an organization away from **Veterinary practice** clears both.

### Main location

Where they are and how to reach them: an address and a **Phone**. This becomes the organization's main location, and more can be added on its record. The address is checked when you save: when a standardized spelling is found (for addresses in the United States and Canada), that spelling is saved; otherwise the address is saved as typed. **Check this address** shows you the difference before saving.
