Shifts in RescueConsole work on a simple principle: you define the window, the rules, and the roles you need, and volunteers fill the hours themselves. You never chase people down to confirm — the system enforces who can book and when, and shows you exactly where you still need coverage.

How a shift window works

A shift window is a block of time you open for volunteers to claim. When you create one, you specify which roles are needed, how many people each role requires, and whether volunteers can cover a portion of the window or must take the whole thing. Once the window is open, volunteers see it in their own calendar view and book the hours they are available for. They can only book slots that match their approved roles and locations. Everything else — notice period enforcement, maximum hours, role eligibility — is checked automatically before a booking is confirmed.

Partial and whole-shift booking

You can allow volunteers to cover any portion of a window, or require them to take the entire block. When partial booking is enabled, you set a minimum and maximum length. A six-hour Saturday shift, for example, can be split across three people each taking two hours — the window is fully covered without any single volunteer committing to the whole day.

Calendar views

The Shifts workspace gives you four ways to look at your schedule:
  • Week grid — An hour-by-hour grid showing every shift block for the week, with overlap visible so you can spot over- or under-staffed hours at a glance.
  • Day view — A single-day breakdown of every window and booking, useful when an event or busy period needs closer attention.
  • Month view — A high-level calendar showing which days have shifts, suitable for planning and communicating upcoming needs.
  • Agenda view — A chronological list of upcoming shifts, useful for reviewing what is coming in the next several days.

The organization-wide calendar

Separate from the Shifts calendar, RescueConsole includes an organization-wide calendar that collects everything with a date across every workspace: shifts, events, medical due dates, scheduled vet visits, arrivals, adoptions, and tasks. You can filter by source, so volunteers see only shifts while coordinators see the full picture.

Coverage at a glance

The Events workspace surfaces which upcoming events still have open shift places to fill, so you can see at a glance where you are short-staffed before the day arrives. Within Shifts, the week grid uses color and capacity counts on each block to show filled versus open places per role — you do not need to open each record to understand the state of your schedule.

Coordinator sign-off

Once a shift is complete, a coordinator can sign off on it. Sign-off locks the hours for that window and makes them reportable for grant applications and hour-tracking requirements. Locked hours cannot be edited without reopening the sign-off, which creates a clear audit record.

Booking Rules

Set notice windows, maximum hours, role and location approvals, and how cancellation requests are handled.

Volunteer Approvals

Approve volunteers for roles and locations, manage expiring qualifications, and track who is still waiting.
