Where you can add custom fields
Custom fields are available on all of the following record types:Animals
Anything your standard fields don’t cover — sponsorship status, behavioral scores, transport origin, or internal notes.
People
Role-specific information like volunteer availability, foster home details, or donor recognition preferences — shown per role (see below).
Organizations
Relationship notes, contract numbers, or any other data you track about vet practices, rescues, and suppliers.
Donations
Fund designations, campaign codes, or gift restrictions beyond the built-in fields.
Campaigns
Grant tracking details, reporting categories, or external IDs that tie a campaign to another system.
Shifts
Site-specific requirements, training prerequisites, or coordinator notes attached to a shift window.
Events
Venue information, sponsor acknowledgements, or logistics data that doesn’t fit the standard event fields.
Field types
When you create a custom field, choose the type that fits your data:Record layouts
Custom fields don’t appear anywhere until you place them in a record layout. Go to Settings → Record layouts to control which fields appear on each form, in what order, and whether they are required. A record layout is separate for:- The intake form — the fields shown when you first add an animal or person.
- The record view — the fields shown (and editable) on the record itself after creation.
Required fields
Mark any field Required in the layout editor. A required field must be filled before the form can be submitted. Required fields in the record view prevent saving a record with that section incomplete.Field order
Drag fields up or down within a section to set the order they appear. Sections themselves can be reordered the same way.Fields per person role
People in RescueConsole can hold multiple roles — volunteer, foster, and donor at once. The People record shows a tab for each role a person holds, and each tab can have its own set of custom fields. This means you can collect foster home capacity and pet restrictions on the Foster tab without cluttering the Volunteer tab, and track donation acknowledgement preferences on the Donor tab without those fields appearing anywhere else. Go to Settings → Record layouts → People and select the role tab you want to configure.Custom fields in exports
Every CSV export includes your custom fields. When you export a list from Animals, People, or any other workspace, choose All fields to include custom fields alongside the standard ones. The column header matches the field label you set in Settings.Custom field mapping during import
When you import animals or people from a spreadsheet, the column mapper lets you point any column in your file at a custom field you’ve already created. This means you can bring in data from a previous system and land it exactly where it needs to go — no reformatting required.Tips for keeping custom fields manageable
Tips for keeping custom fields manageable
- Group related fields in a named section so the form stays readable as fields accumulate.
- Use Select and Multi-select types instead of free text wherever your team needs to filter or report on the data — free text values don’t group consistently in list filters.
- If a field applies to most records but not all, leave it optional in the layout rather than required — required fields that often don’t apply create friction at intake.
