A chat channel gets the same news as the bell: an assignment, a shift given up, a transport reminder, a new bid, a partner’s request, a transfer, a registry review. Each piece of news is posted once, however many people the bell rang for, with their names and a link back to the record. You choose which kinds go to which channel, so adoptions can go to one channel and volunteers to another.

What you need

An incoming webhook address from the channel. It is a web address that lets whoever holds it post into that one channel, so treat it like a password. RescueConsole stores it sealed and never shows it again: the list shows only where it points and its last four characters.
An address has to be the platform’s own. RescueConsole refuses anything else, so a chat channel cannot be used to post to some other server. For that, use a webhook.

Add a channel

1

Open Integrations

Open Settings → Advanced & security → Integrations. Chat channels are at the bottom of the page. Only an organization admin can add one.
2

Add a chat channel

Press Add a chat channel, choose where it is, give it a name you will recognize (#adoptions, Volunteers), and paste the webhook address.
3

Choose what it gets

Every kind is ticked to start: assignments, shifts, transports, auction bids, partners, transfers and registry reviews. Untick what that channel should not get.
4

Test it

Press Test. A test message is posted into the channel now, and the page says what the platform answered.

When the news is posted

The bell’s news is posted every five minutes, when its emails are sent. Nothing from before a channel was added is posted to it. A notification exists only when somebody was told. If everybody it was for chose Not at all under My account, there is nothing for the channel either.

The log

Press Log on a channel to see the last twenty posts and what the platform answered to each.

When a channel stops working

If five posts in a row fail, the channel is paused, and the page says why. If the platform answers that the address no longer exists (the Slack app was removed, or the Discord webhook was deleted), it is paused at once. Nothing is posted to a paused channel. Fix it on the platform’s side, then press Resume. If you made a new webhook, press Edit and paste it under New webhook address. Saving it starts the channel again. You can also pause a channel yourself, and resume it when you want its posts again.

The demo

The demo cannot add a chat channel: a channel is our servers posting to an address you name, and everybody shares the demo’s sign-in.
