Two pages in the Operations & forms group of Settings decide the paperwork an animal carries: Cage cards, the card printed for its kennel door, and ID format, how its ID number is made.

Cage cards

Settings → Operations & forms → Cage cards holds the templates a cage card is printed from: what the card shows, what it is printed on, and where its QR code goes. You print a card for an animal from the animal itself; see Printing. A card reads the animal’s own record, so it can carry medical and behavioral notes, but only the ones a template asks for. That is why you can keep more than one template: a kennel card for your team that carries the medical flags, and a card for an adoption day, where the public reads it, that does not. Anyone who can see animals can read the templates. Adding, changing and deleting them needs Configure on Animals. Until you make a template, printing a card uses the standard set of fields.

Templates

Press New template, give it a Name such as “Kennel card”, and press Create. A new template starts with the standard fields: name, ID, species, breed, sex, age, status, location and intake date. The first template you make is the Default: the one every card prints from unless somebody chooses another. Make default on another template makes it the default instead. The bin beside a template deletes it straight away, without asking.

Template settings

Each template is a card on the page. Its settings save as soon as you change them. For A page on your own website, write the address with {pet_id}, {id} or {name} where the animal goes, as in https://contoso.com/adopt/{pet_id}. Each card fills in its own animal. A page that carries your adoptable-animals widget can take ?animal={id} and show that one animal. Until you enter an address, the template prints no QR code, and the page says so.

Fields on the card

On the card lists the fields the template prints, in order, with a count. The arrows move a field up or down and the bin takes it off. Add a field lists every field not already on the card; press one to add it at the end. When a template carries Medical or Behaviour, the page reminds you: that is right for a kennel door, and worth thinking about for a card the public reads on an adoption day.

The PetSmart card

Add the PetSmart card makes a ready-made template in the style of the card PetSmart adoption partners hang: letter paper, the standard wording, and a QR code to the animal’s record. The button is offered only while you do not already have one. A template in this style also has:
  • Corners: Photo bottom left, QR code bottom right, or Photo bottom right, QR code bottom left.
  • More sponsor logos: Hill’s and Dr. Elsey’s, the program’s sponsors, print on every PetSmart card. Add up to four more logos from your partner kit with Add a sponsor logo (PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF); they print after them, in the order shown. The bin under a logo removes it.

ID format

Settings → Operations & forms → ID format decides how the ID given to each new animal is built. Every animal gets an ID; what you choose here is its shape. Only an Organization admin can save the ID format.
Changing the format never renames an ID that has already been given: IDs are printed on kennel cards and written into paper records. The new format applies to the next animal taken in.
What kind of ID offers three: For a number, the page shows The next two IDs will look like, worked out from today’s date in your organization’s time zone, so the example matches what intake will stamp. Press Save ID format to keep your choice.

Prefix and suffix

The Prefix comes before the number and the Suffix after it. Each can be:
  • None.
  • A date, in one of ten formats, from Year, month, day (20260904) down to Year (2026), Month (09) or Day (04).
  • Your own text: up to 12 letters and numbers, with no spaces or punctuation, such as RC.

Starting the count again

Start counting again decides whether the number goes back to 1: Never, keep counting up, Every year, Every month or Every day. Only the choices your date allows are offered. To start again each year, the ID has to include the year; each month needs the year and the month; each day needs the whole date. Otherwise last year’s numbers would come round again and two animals would share an ID. If you change the date so that your reset is no longer safe, the page says so and the count carries on instead.
